I love popcorn! I especially love movie popcorn with extra butter on it! My aunt Kathy used to make popcorn and she would sometimes top it with Velveeta cheese. It was gooey and buttery tasting and very yummy and it was one of my favorites. My mom had a recipe for caramel corn that had belonged to my grandmother. It (the caramel) cooked on top of the stove and was very crackly and crunchy when it was put on the popcorn. I also love caramel corn that tastes like the old Cracker Jack’s. Do you remember Cracker Jack’s? It was great because not only did you get to get some great tasting caramel corn, but you also got a “prize” inside of the box. It might be a fake tatoo or even, if you were really lucky, a ring!

Although I still enjoy all of those kinds of popcorn and would love to eat them frequently, I know they aren’t very healthy for me. As with other types of foods such as soups, casseroles, desserts, and snacks, I’ve tried to find ways to cut back on the “bad” calories, cholesterol and carbs when eating popcorn while still enjoying some variety. It’s not really difficult since there are so many herbs and spices that go well with popcorn.

Keep in mind that although popcorn in general isn’t bad for you, what we put on top of it can be very unhealthy. Although recipes may say that they’re “healthy”, take a look at the ingredients and use a little common sense. Anything that has a lot of butter or sugar isn’t going to be good for you one way or another. For example, popcorn topped with a bunch of butter isn’t bad for you regarding carbs, but it’s packed with calories and cholesterol. Bottom line is…it’s up to you to determine the “healthiness” of what your popcorn has on it.

Some toppings to think about using on your popcorn are parmesan cheese, taco seasoning, butter and sea salt, cinammon (add some artificial sweetener if you’d like), garlic salt with parsley, garlic and onion powder, chili powder, and cayenne pepper.
