Jack and I love where we live.  When we want to get away for a day, we have a lot of options of where to go, but we generally use the weather to make a decision about our destination.  In the summer we go north or to higher elevations.  In the winter we usually go south or to lower elevations.  Today, however, we decided to go to Breckenridge since we hadn’t been there since last summer.

Breckenridge is about two hours from our house.  Although it’s best known for skiing, Jack and I don’t ski.  We do, however, enjoy looking around at the shops and people watching.  We also like to go out to eat and Breckenridge has plenty of options for food, so it’s a great place for us to go  That was our destination today.

Driving over Wilkerson Pass we could see the Collegiate Peaks near Buena Vista.  They’re an amazing range of mountains and they looked majestic even from the far distance.  We’re always inspired by the sight of them and by knowing that we can see them from so far away.  In the summer, we like to drive back up into them and explore some of the ghost towns and hot springs that are located there.  I digress…

After driving through Fairplay and Alma, we drove over Hoosier Pass  and then started our downhill drive into Breckenridge.  It’s always a pretty drive going in to town.  In the winter the snow gets really, really deep in that area and it’s not unusual to see it up to the roofs of some of the houses.  Also, the icicles hanging off of the roofs are huge.  We enjoy the trip in immensely!  OnIMG_4756ce we got into town, we found a parking spot, left our coats in the car (36 degrees feels much warmer when you’re at higher altitudes and the sun is out), and took off for a stroll through town.  IMG_4746w

There are a couple of stores in Breckenridge that we really like, but my favorite is called Marigolds and it has a little bit of everything imaginable in it.  It’s sort of an antique store with some new things that look old thrown in.  Marigolds has a lot of antiques and jewelry, a little bit of clothing, antique looking pictures, candles, and more.  It’s a fun store to spend some time in and there’s IMG_4753something for just IMG_4750about everyone.  Jack and I enjoy browsing through all of the interesting objects they have and just when we think we’ve seen it all, we’ll notice something new.  It’s a fun place to take visitors when they come to see us and they all agree that it’s a “must see” in Breckenridge.

We hadn’t haIMG_4760d breakfast this morning, so lunch sounded like a really good ideIMG_4757a.  Our favorite restaurant for lunch is Downstairs at Eric’s.  It’s on the main street and it’s sort of easy to miss is you don’t know what you’re looking for, but it’s definitely worth going to.  Eric’s has a very extensive menu that should please everyone.  Appetizers, salads, sandwiches, home style meals, and pizza are just of few of the options.  Today, Jack had a hamburger and onion rings and I had a chicken IMG_4758parmesan sandwich and fries.  I know….great for the arteries, but sometimes you just have to go with what sounds good!  Both of our meals were delicious and it was more food than either of us could eat.  We’ve never had a bad meal there and highly recommend it to anyone who’s in Breckenridge.

IMG_4766Cabin Fever is a nice IMG_4761store that sells all kinds of things for (guess what?) decorating your cabin.  Who would have guessed?  🙂  They’ve been around for a long time and there are always new items there.  It’s a good store to go to if you’re looking for something mountainish for accessorizing your home.  They have a nice and varieIMG_4762d selection of merchandise from pillows to pottery and from lamps to bedspreads.  I could easily spend a lot of money there, but reel myself in by asking myself, “do I need it?”, “will it make my life better or happier?”, and “where will I put it?”  Normally by the time I get to the third question I’ve decided that I really don’t need to bring more stuff home with us.

On the way back to our car, we noticed a store that we’ve never seen beIMG_4772fore.  I’m sure it didn’t just pop up overnight, but Breckenridge has a lot of little areas that are tucked in behind other stores and restaurants, so it’s not difficult to miss them.  It’s one of those places where you say, “Oh, I didn’t know that (fill in the blank) was there!” on a continual basis.  This store was called French Kiss and specializes in linens, books, IMG_4773and home decor.  Mostly they had a lot of linens and it was a fun place to look around.  I IMG_4781found some kitchen towels that looked like they were from the 50’s and they were in aIMG_4775 nice cloth “envelope”.  I love that they had crocheted edges and rick rack on them.  They were reasonably priced and met all three of my criteria (do I need it, will it make me happy, where will I put it) so I decided to purchase them.

It was a fun day and we really appreciate being able to take these little day trips.  It’s nice to get away and do something different on our time off from work and it leaves us feeling refreshed.
