I have a couple of orchids that I bought about 1 1/2 years ago. I didn’t have any experience growing them and didn’t know anyone who had, but they were pretty and I thought I would give it a try. I brought them home and put them in a south window that gets filtered light. They really did well and bloomed for about nine months, which really surprised me. The blooms finally ended and I treated them as I do any houseplant, with a little water not a whole lot else. When the roots were overtaking the area above the pots, I knew it was time to repot.
I know that orchids need different living conditions than other house plants, but I wasn’t sure what exactly was best for them. I have a friend at work who I found grows orchids and she gave me some advice about the potting mixture and water requirements. Today I found some grow mix for them so I bought it. I don’t know if there’s a huge difference between different orchid mixes or not, but I couldn’t see anything that was obvious. It did seem like one was slightly more woody feeling.
I couldn’t find any little pots, but I did have these two tea canisters that I thought were pretty cute. They were bigger than I needed, so I put the orchids inside of sandwich bags (look at how root bound they are), added some potting mix, put them in their new containers, and then filled in some space with half of a plastic grocery bag to make the pots the right size. Once I was done with that, I tucked the plastic inside and sprinkled a little of the potting mix on top to make them look “finished”.
I love the way my orchids look in their new homes!
